Similar plan was hatched in Canada - I think in the 60s?- designed I believe to preserve hake. This one entailed using 50 cal machine guns but was foiled due to an ammunition mixup.

It’s difficult if co-authors “own” part of the study and can raise a fuss if excluded. But if it is a matter of different visions, perfectly legit to give them opportunity to bow out of YOUR paper. But get it in writing so there are minimal hijinks after publication.
