I started on the 6502, graduated to a PDP-8, then went to a PDP-11. Had a few Z80 boxes along the way too.

I have very fond memories of writing FORTRAN-77 code on the PDP-11/73 :-) Wonderful machine!

The 6502 CPU was powerful enough to do real work, but simple enough that you could learn how to write assembly for it in a few days.

One can do a LOT with just a few registers, 65 opcodes and 64 KB of RAM along with some custom support chips for video, sound and I/O.
