I recently got these "display" glasses, which let me do work via the glasses, but I'm wondering if I need to be worried that if I do that in a cafe someone will smash them.

Yeah. I think the key is just that incentives of all stakeholders need to be aligned. Even when the people who benefit pay that may not be the case (case in point: most people pay for mobile phone service but hate their carrier).
