I really appreciate that @pbsnews.org ended the interview with this graphic.

It captures, in the simplest and starkest terms, the brutal arithmetic driving this country's homelessness catastrophe.

There is simply no modern example of this because it is a made up phenomenon! Kevin Spacey is not out here making a stunning work of genius! What the fuck!

Like… “De Profundis”?

Wilde actually did suffer consequences from being outed, ie BEING THROWN IN JAIL AND FORCED TO DO HARD LABOR, unlike today’s “cancelled” sex pests who just… keep making money by going to do comedy in
Saudi Arabia or whatever.

Still mad about this. Has any “””cancelled””” man ever turned around and made his “greatest work of art yet.” Has this literally ever happened. Is this woman huffing glue.

(Yes the writer is unfortunately a woman, idk who exactly wrote this social copy obviously.)

I handed a big stack of them to the mail lady who was collecting mail from the post box today… extremely satisfying experience. Bon voyage my little envelopes.

I saw him speak at Oxford with @empowermint.bsky.social once and was so aware I was in the presence of greatness. Profoundly grateful to have gotten to be there and for every single play.

Nobody was more brilliant or more inventive, more dazzling with form or language. The fact that he so easily might have died in the camps is so haunting… the specters of everybody who didn’t is always there as a shadow.

But obvs this is all a massive structural/societal problem, the govt here wants to destroy public education, and again massive numbers of kids have long covid without realizing it/are still traumatized by the pandemic irrespective of health. It’s not good even before you start thinking about AI!

A lot of this is also rooted in the standardized testing regime in secondary schools which has made reading actual full novels much rarer. One of my mentees was enraged when she got to college and saw how much more they were reading and also how realized how few classics she’d read in high school.

The students I interact with are highly motivated, care about their work, read a lot, etc. Those kids absolutely still exist. At the same time I’ve heard lots of stories from friends who teach at good unis (including Oxford) about how hard it is to get students to read esp long books.
