Campaigning to sit on the local school board. Many doors open to reveal someone I know — friend, teaching colleague, union member, student — & I realize they’ve already formed an opinion about my vision, honesty, & work ethic. I would like to believe that most would vouch for me.

Pet peeve of mine: People are online debating a Chick-fil-A boycott and some wag posts “Their chicken isn’t anything special anyway.” No matter how many times it happens, that one poster is sure they’re clever and original.

Framing matters. I think the erosion began when we started talking about FREE SPEECH rather than FREEDOM OF SPEECH. ‘Free’ as a modifier implies there is other, unfree speech — giving rise to the question “Who decides?”
