... The biggest risk you take is in doing nothing. That is a guaranteed outcome. Waiting for someone else to solve our dilemma ensures unthinkable tragedy.

To become a billionaire, you must impoverish billions of others. There’s no other way. The Earth is a closed system and the source of all wealth. Her rocks, her soil, her air.
Do not admire billionaires. In their eyes you are inferior, expendable, a unit of profit, or a unit of labor, that is all.

We have to demand a better world. The #ClimateCrisis knows no boundaries. We can pay now, while there’s time to save ourselves, or pay later, with complete environmental, agricultural, and social collapse.
👉All those fascists running around these days? They’re salivating over the opportunity.

Für mich gehört diese "system review" zu den besten #Talkcollapse Texten, die ich bisher gefunden habe ...!

... But now imagine that at every stage of that chain, the language that is used gets softer. Gentler. More kind. That’s the conservative bias inside a domain – we didn’t have to get anyone else involved, but at every point in our own chain we maybe altered the data a bit.

Acknowledge sometimes humans might be using answers we want. Imagine for a moment a radiologist sees something bad on a daily review of scans. He’s going to use language to describe it to a GP, and then that doctor will have to tell the patient. And then the patient has to tell his child. ...

But here’s another way to consider this equation:
(wrong assumptions) + (wrong application) + (wrong synthesis) = (size of possible error)
In this version we see that one error, put up with an error, starts to grow error at the other side of the equation.

So what is this conservative bias? I have a simple relationship equation for you:
(assumptions) + (application) + (synthesis) = (conclusions)
This is our core of empirical science.

And we do this… everywhere, all the time, and I think you might be aware of it in your own life but maybe don’t assess just how much you do it.

My theory is that the reason all the examples in the table got revised in the same direction (faster than expected) is because most of our conservative bias manifests in the same way. We humans like to put theoretical danger further away than it really is.

This 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸 is an expansion to "Limits to Growth" from data, made because no one is paying to do these things anymore. In practice our synthesis is going to show events we once thought were far into the future are not. They are in fact often happening right now.

My plan is to give you tools to spot this bias, for us to attempt to correct for it, and when we do I’m afraid that I’m also going to have to show you a general collapse of the Earth system, just sitting there right in data already published.

What sits before you now is a lone researcher’s project on how a pervasive 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗮𝘀 has spread throughout the world we’ve built in such a way that the true size of ecological overshoot has been hidden from us all.
