“Her name’s Hira,” he says, when Kaveh is already eating. “She’s one of the people who disapproved of my intervention earlier.” Alhaitham munches on the vegetables, pensive. “…She apologised.”

Something about Kaveh’s hum tears Alhaitham’s gaze off the lines he isn’t reading. There is a triumphant glint in his eyes.

“And she didn’t die from it. Amazing, isn’t it?” Alhaitham purses his lips together, regretting that his headphones can’t selectively muffle the sarcasm in Kaveh’s voice. “Maybe you misjudged her.”

“I never misjudge.”

“I must have imagined you calling me a loud, annoying busybody when we met, then.”

Against his will, a smile pulls at the edges of Alhaitham’s lips. It’s been about a year since Kaveh forced himself into the quiet Alhaitham never seems to find with him around anymore and turned silence into something warm enough to cradle two people who seem to orbit each other to disagree over everything.

“I said it and I maintain it,” Alhaitham declares, once his mouth is empty again. “Your virtues lie elsewhere.”

Kaveh laughs. “Is that a compliment I hear? From you?”

“You look like you didn’t even try to sleep last night.”

“And you look like you fell off a lunatic’s treehouse two weeks ago,” Kaveh snapped back, regretting his words as soon as they scratched up a throat still sore from the chilly moisture of the rainforest at night; but he was tired of this conversation.

He was tired, in general, as aware as Alhaitham himself that he wouldn’t be able to postpone fixing his neglected sleep schedule for much longer. To get Alhaitham off his case, if nothing else.

Before that, however, Kaveh wanted to do one last thing: “Let’s go out for breakfast?”

Alhaitham eyed the wheelchair as Kaveh drove it up by the bed.

“Do you plan to push me down the street?”

Kaveh rolled his eyes.

“It’s really tempting.” He headed for the wardrobe and threw both doors open. “Unfortunately, Cyno would have my head before noon.”
