Was Wukong ever /truly/ popular though? Because from my perspective it was big in China, but kinda okay ish in the west?

That's pretty much every war since the dawn of time, but at least in this example we can point and say "these guys fought against objective evil".

You should know better yourself that there is a massive difference between actual heroes who fought to defeat the nazi blight and the people in power who shook hands with nazis until the very last moment (and long after the war ended).

But, I think Europe largely moved on from from fascism after the war. They were still bastards, but era appropriate bastards. Meanwhile US was (and still is) still horny for the ideology. Again, I struggle to file "putting ex-nazis to power in Italy" under "it's just geopolitics bro".

If we stick to textbook definition of fascism, then yeah, they were not dictatorships and did not invade neighbours. But it's not like they were completely opposed to all the "fun" parts of nazi regime. They all dabbled in minority oppression, especially in colonies far away from home.
