❄️ A bit of a thaw yesterday, and various artifacts of bygone eras encased in ice for decades begin to emerge.

Today I learned that I paid $200 for audio editing software I can only use while online, which is tough to do when 37,000 feet up in the air. I don’t think this was an issue prior to the latest round of enshittification.

🏒 After being 3 goals behind, the Capitals win with an overtime tie-breaker from Sourdiff. The last time we were there he had a hat trick. Glad do witness both of his big days.

❄️ Fortunately, our snow shoe quest was successful enough for the kids to be able to spend some time outside every day since Sunday. They even built a snowman with the hard, frozen white mass that passes as snow, so now I have a stalker looking at me through this window. Not at all unnerving!

🏀 A rare Wizards home W, against the Portland Trail Blazers. Even a horrible organization can give its fans something to be happy about once every few months.

But we’re not renewing.

Laugh or cry?

It would have been even funnier if it were on an iPad, but I am still happy with my Daylight tablet.

A working telephone, as seen in the lobby of the Fairmont hotel in San Francisco. Note that the dial is not, in fact, rotary and that the phone is digital — the physical equivalent of the faux vintage (fauxld?) photo filters that are themselves now quaint but used to be a new phenomenon.

I take back what I wrote about Tapestry: it is not just a pretty face but a genuinely useful pan-media viewer that even takes cross posts into account (see below). Genuinely impressed!

🏒 A high-scoring game from the Caps last night, yet again! Alex Ovechkin added two to his record, Justin Sourdif had a hat trick. Plus two penalty shots and more than a few brawls to make it the prototypical (if not typical) game of hockey.

Our favorite Smithsonian museum(s) continue to surprise and delight. Tucked away on the third and fourth floors of SAAM is the storage center you can actually visit, featuring one impressive sculpture. The parallel space in the National Portrait Gallery is as impressive, though currently empty.

📸 Day 12: Home.

This year I learned that storks made their home in my hometown since I was last there. The creek that runs through it is a frog-ridden bog for most of the year, so they made the right choice.

📸 Day 11: Feast.

We have made countless food spreads for ourselves and the kids, but here is one that they made for us. And it was delicious!

📸 Day 10: Travel.

Of which we did a lot this year. The first trip was to San Francisco to see some of its tilted houses or, in this case, a tilted hotel.

📸 Day 9: Baking.

A box of Honolulu’s finest malassadas. We learned about the place from our Lyft driver who turned out to be a fellow Serbian immigrant. Small world.

📸 Day 8: Grinch.

No photos of the guy on my camera roll, but is this Tawny Frogmouth we saw at the Norfolk Zoo not a spitting image? Just paint him green and call it a day.

📸 Day 7: Solstice.

These stone pillars at the Kadinjača monument in Western Serbia are not exactly Stonehenge, but maybe they do align with the stars? Incidentally, the Yugoslav World War 2 monument architecture is the only kind of brutalism I can get behind.

📸 Day 6: Sparkle.

You don’t have to wait for the holiday season to light some sparklers. This one was from a trip to the Outer Banks, cropped to protect the innocent.
