Took a while to figure out. The PC I used for testing, sends a <CR> when you press enter. The front panel however sent <CR><LF> after each command. The receiving software was meant to ignore <LF>, but that part obviously didn't work...

Of course it doesn't work ;)
The front panel and the main board should be communicating over a serial interface. Guess they're not actually communicating.
Good thing it doesn't have to work until tomorrow morning 😬
