By casting one actor as both John the Baptist and Judas and presenting the followers as archetypes rather than apostles, Godspell highlights that devotion and betrayal live in every one of us, and that the story is carried by human patterns, not fixed roles.
It’s truly a brilliant work.

The movie is definitely of a time but everything it’s addressing is also applicable today. It even makes you see the Gospel of Matthew differently because of setting and interpretation.
