New Jersey law says that courts should rule on expungement petitions within 60 days. But prosecutors and judges delay the process; in Essex County, people wait a year or more to get their expungements. We (the Office of the Public Defender) are asking the NJ Supreme Court to intervene. Read more ⬇️
He wants to wipe his record clean under #NJ's expungement program. A huge backlog in petitions awaiting review in his home county of Essex could mean months — maybe years — before a decision over whether his past record can be erased. www.nj.com/news/2025/02...
They want to walk away from their criminal past. This N.J. county doesn’t make it easy.
There's a backlog of nearly 2,000 expungement cases across the state with 25 percent in just one county.
