Conquered would work if there was a war and the land was taken by force.
The majority of land was taken by lying on treaties, encroachment, and attrition caused by disease and wholesale slaughter of animals for no reason. Hardly something to be “proud” of.

I will say that schools dedicate pretty large portions of their curriculum to Italian and German history. Unfortunately not enough seeing the way the country is going.
