Just a dude. People suck, and you better come to terms with that. Born in Marseille, raised in Texas. Veteran of a dumb war.
Yes, you did.

And yes he did. He disbanded the 1er Choc, 11e Choc and 12e Choc, and a small fraction of their personnel was divided into what would become the CPIS and CPEOM, but this did not constitute an operational unit. This i why the GO of the 1er RPIMA became a SOF unit in the 70s.

Charles de Gaulle (a pretty forward thinking guy) disbanded/downsized all French SOF units after the Algerian war ended.

What happened after that? Well, it turns out it's actually pretty tough to do that whole Françafrique thing without SOF!

So guess what the Army did the second he was gone?

The first three are all amazing, and the third contains the single most powerful and heartbreaking description of the battle of Dien Bien Phu. It helps that I know everyone who is mentioned in the book through my gramps.

The fourth is just incredible. One of the best contemporary mil history books.

A lot of people (including some GWOT vets) have no real frame of reference when it comes to this stuff.

The citation bellow talks about a battalion's 40km fighting retreat over mountainous terrain against an entire north Vietnamese division (including a major river crossing). Will American.....

Have you read this book? Dude was a legion para during the Algerian war, and he went on to command the SAS.

And he fought under him all the way from Africa to Berchtesgaden. Really awesome guy.

There's a ton of good books (all in French) about the history of SDECE, and all of them cover the period where Alexandre de Marenches fired everyone.

My knowledge of the story comes from my great uncle being someone who witnessed it first hand.

A bit about his time in SDECE:

I watched them use rifle grenades in Afghanistan, but my favorite was the LGI Mle F1. It was cool as hell.
