So we end up with suburban sprawl - because everyone wants their “safe space” - and no real community forms. We can ignore problems if we don’t have to see them, and the diffusion of responsibility takes over.

My take on this is that it’s rooted in lack of empathy, or the refusal to acknowledge anything that makes them upset or uncomfortable. The US being so hyper-individualistic amplifies this.
