To quite a large extent, I would say, hierarchies within companies are also heavily influenced by the societies they are built in, and so it makes sense that at both scales you have a similar impact on the technologies that emerge

I agree, I saw it like a subset of a greater thing that the paper you posted showed, like a smaller scale application of the same effect maybe. It was just the first similar analysis that came to mind, and they're both from around the same era too, ironically. Would love modern takes on this too

Isn't this also a bit the premise behind Conway's law? Organisations' communication structure (and hierarchies I guess) heavily influence the architectures of the applications they develop. Makes sense to see it so

You can support free trade and commerce and still see that some technological choices bear risks in the moment (or in the long term) and not go down that path. I don't believe that those two ideas are antithetical. Free markets don't force you to buy from an oppressor.

Digital sovereignty is not about hate though, it's about self preservation. I've seen a lot (but not enough) of the same concerns. I also expect we still have the ability to discern between Americans and the predatory practices of American tech giants.
