🇬🇲Meet Saikou from Gambia. He is a new member of the Migrants of the Mediterranean community. We met him through a field recording trip in the Spring, and we are truly inspired by his resilience.

“Migrants often feel invisible….telling and listening to a story…opens and holds a healing space.”

We are dedicated to doing more to help this incredible community of migrants in our fieldwork to come. You can help us do more when you donate to the Annual Holiday Fundraiser today, and thank you.

Each year we learn more about how profoundly our work connects with students and scholars in the university landscape, and Zieger’s latest publication proves it again––and with heart.
December 15, 2025 at 4:35 PM
It is our honor as a startup organization to be compared with such elite company, and by a scholar as prolific and compassionate as Zieger.
December 15, 2025 at 4:35 PM
In one breath, Professor Susan Zieger captures the importance of MotM’s Humanitarian Storytelling within the ecosystem of humanitarian actors, “Whereas the International Organization for Migration counts and tracks migrant flow quantitatively," she says, “MotM documents it qualitatively.”
December 15, 2025 at 4:35 PM
When you support MotM you help bring more of these impactful experiences to students across the country––moments that leave the indelible mark of humanity (the thing that really defines global migration!) on every one.

These normal questions were asked to extraordinary people and made the situation feel human. When the unit ended, I was left feeling like I needed to do more to advocate for the people and their stories behind migration.”

“Not only did we get to discuss the migration process with them but also, what they like to do and who they are as people. Students asked if they like football, or what a Friday night looks like in their new home.

Later in the unit, we had the opportunity to speak with Denzel and Amir. These Zoom calls completely opened my eyes. To hear Denzel and Amir share their experience traveling to their new destination and the steps that followed, from their own words in real time was truly inspiring.”

“When you read about migration in the news, or have conversations regarding the politics around it no one ever talks about the individual. In most cases they are represented by a number or an offensive assumption. We often forget that there is a journey involved.

One of the first assignments was to go onto the MoM website, read multiple stories and learn about the organization's founding values and mission. This type of Humanitarian Storytelling was a fairly new concept to me.”

“My first introduction to Migrants of the Mediterranean was in the classroom. My French professor created a translation final project, a unit that was built around migration, and we would each translate a Journey Story.

“You don’t even have time to eat or drink in the desert,” Sainey said. “The [more] fear you have, the less you eat.”
December 10, 2025 at 6:30 PM
He faced countless setbacks before he arrived in Agadez, Niger at the verge of the Sahara desert crossing.
December 10, 2025 at 6:30 PM
He began by water, with a ferry from Banjul to Barra in Gambia. He then continued on motorbike all the way to the Senegalese border where he boarded a bus to Mali. He paid money to either the smugglers or police who threatened jail time or deportation.
