You can use that to your advantage and it will eventually come from within but this will be a journey, and it won't be a pretty one.

So what can you do? You can do wellness checks, show them that despite disagreeing with their actions you think they are worthy of support, be there with them, and be sober, be an example of the behaviour you'd like to see from them. It is awkward as heck to get blitzed around a person who isn't.

The difficult part of any addiction (saying this as a recovered addict) is that they have to want to stop. I'm sorry to say that begging and pleading may push them further into it, as guilt can be a really convenient reason to self destruct with the mindset of others being better off without them.

I think thats a valid fear for you to have developed, and anyone worth your time is going to make sure they give you that info for your ease of mind.
