Works at Stanford on equitable climate and energy law/policy with a big helping of wildfire and insurance.
Essentially the folks running Seadrift want everybody else in Marin (or CA) to pay to adapt the sand spit to climate change.

This above all else is a harbinger.

We need to litigate the inverse condemnation issue in California soon so we can all plan with some legal certainty.

Left unsaid is how the Seadrift Homeowners Association has been threatening lawsuits unless the County promises to elevate the street on its dime. County wanted to condition new building permits on release from liability to provide access in future due to SLR. Seadrift said “taking” in response.

I actually did. I think of them as linked projects but the tour guides did not agree.

Say patio. Not gravel. We need to stop saying that. It’s an extended entry/roller skating/push bike loop.

The other frame to emphasize is that reluctant people are imposing costs on all of us. This is about being a member of your community instead of a taker. Like PTA if kids in school.

One thing we discovered on the way home is that the plant took from 1968 to 1985 to build. YIKES!!! A lot of that had to do with changes to the design to manage seismic risk that were undertaken after construction was well underway. You can still see the bolt on modifications when you visit.

As important was an impression of the culture of DCPP. A set of people who are devoted to a single purpose and meaning. Deeply ingrained safety culture. A sense that the work is making a profound contribution to the society in which they live. It felt so different than most "modern" workplaces.

They wouldn't let us take pictures on the turbine deck. But I will share a few that they took for us. It felt like visiting the equivalent of a gothic cathedral, but the mid-20th century version. Two turbines and paired generators producing 2.2GW of power is something to behold.

As the California Wildfire Fund, under direction from the recently enacted SB254, considers changes to how our state socializes the cost of wildfire, experience from the Southeastern wind pools is important food for thought.

Uh… we already live in that world.

3rd largest fire department in the US after USFS and CalFire is…

Wildfire Defense Systems.

It’s just that their customer is the insurance company, not the homeowner so people don’t know what’s going on.
