Geordie guiri in La Gomera, language school owner, ELT teacher trainer, football fan (#nufc), very lapsed blogger / fanzine writer and occasional scribbler for When Saturday Comes, IBWM, World Soccer Magazine, Sabotage Times, Japan Soccer and more.
Not his only failure, of course. House of Fraser about as close to being the “Harrods of the High Street” than Xisco was to being Robert Lewandowski.

If I was in your situation, I’d see him as better than nothing too. He’ll stop you going under, but be ready to have hope slowly suffocated out of you.

I love Big Joe but you can see areas we’d be looking to upgrade. Very hard to replace his physicality. Gordon depends on who’s bidding, of course, but you imagine he’d be the one.

I think we could say opportunistic PL buys are great (Pope, Livramento post-relegation, Hall sacrificed for PSR - but otherwise better to shop abroad.

Pope (recent errors notwithstanding) and Burn not bad for £21 million combined.

The frustrating thing is how brittle we look away from home. Players coming back improve us in many ways, but that soft centre is about more than 2-3 injuries. Think 1-2 ‘big’ players need to be moved on in the summer.

I’d say it gets better but it probably doesn’t. We’re long-time specialists in self-destruction.

The Rhineland would never have happened if I’d been prime minister! Blame Sleepy Stanley Baldwin!

Hitler insists Dr Beneš denazifies Czechoslovakia.

You know, when I saw that name I didn’t realise it was about him. There are so many possible candidates nowadays, but it fits him to a tee.

Think Harvey Weinstein’s lawyer would want to sue you for associating him with the other 27 points, Richard. I’m not sure if Witkoff is a bumbling idiot or if he’s deliberately inept. Either way, he’s not half as clever as he thinks he is.

The whiff of easy money. He still thinks it’s like a property deal. If he thinks at all.

“Olympian physique”, though. And probably “a visionary in several disciplines, including as a chiropractor”.

His mother’s dad was a massive fascist and apartheid backer. Imagine the family Christmas dinners…

Facts are woke, mate.

People have got so confident about their own ignorance, haven’t they? Glad your wife lightly debated him but can guarantee it didn’t shake the belief he’s happily parroting out loud.

Same in La Gomera, though here it’s the Germans who are the Brits.

Then one said: “But still, I’d never go back. Too many foreigners in Britain who don’t want to integrate.”
November 14, 2025 at 7:28 PM
I still occasionally chuckle at the memory of the Brits I overheard near Alicante complaining that they couldn’t get British TV and that nobody in the bank could speak decent English. They spent about 5 minutes bemoaning how life in Spain didn’t perfectly cater to the needs of British people.

Probably complaining they can’t find Foster’s on draught.

It might help one or two of them buck their ideas up to get back in the side.
