The current situation is a grave political mistake that is completely avoidable. If our leaders (both state & federal) continue this path, their positions in power will increasingly become untenable. I hope politicians will learn from this lesson & rethink their approach to law and human rights.

Someone in Labor/state govt must take responsibility for this starting by firing whoever wrongly advised the premier that the bill could be constitutional. It is plain simple even to the lay person's eyes that the advice was completely rubbish.

I afraid the warnings from us back then went to deaf ears to our leaders and now we all have to share the political consequences of the poor decisions by an ignorant, ill-informed captain of a sinking ship as we are ever moving closer to a catastrophe in the next state election.

... which last year the federal govt went through the same situation of enacting laws that are unconstitutional i.e. legislation re the NZYQ cohort of refugees repeatedly being knocked back by courts that I am now teaching as an example of failed law reform.

While we are often the harshest judge of ourselves about our responses to contemporary issues (climate crisis, war in Ukraine, refugee crisis etc), we should not forget that, through Chist, God has mercy upon us in his final judgement and we should find comfort in that.
