The architects of family separation didn't spend time on details like how the government would track families it separated. As a result, there was no plan and often no way to reunite families after separation.

In fact, cruelty to children was the point.

When family separations started, border agents often lied to children and their parents about what was happening.

The senior officials who developed or approved the forcible family separation policy callously dismissed the likely serious harms to children--even after they received stark warnings that children would suffer severe, long-lasting trauma.

Nearly 30% of the 4,600+ children forcibly separated between 2017 and 2021 may remain separated: the government hasn't located their parents and can't confirm that they've reunited.
