@miattygen.bsky.social Dana Nessel sent a letter to the MI Supreme Court yesterday in support of the Court’s proposed amendment of Michigan Court Rule 8.115, which would generally prohibit civil arrests of individuals who attend court proceedings or conduct other business in a courthouse.
“When people are afraid to report crimes or come to court because they fear a civil arrest, it puts victims at risk and makes our communities less safe. It’s my sincere hope that the Michigan Supreme Court adopts this amendment to protect access to justice for everyone," said Attorney General Dana Nessel. “Nearly seven months into this fabricated emergency, what is now clear is that DOE will continue issuing these unlawful orders unless the courts intervene. My office has filed to halt these arbitrary orders each time, and we will continue to challenge them to protect Michigan ratepayers. These actions by DOE ignore careful planning, disregard regulatory approvals, and serve no purpose other than to drive up costs for utility customers while standing in the way of more efficient and cost-effective energy resources," said Attorney General Dana Nessel. “Conversion therapy is a destructive, demoralizing, and debunked practice that medical experts agree increases the risk of suicide and depression in the young people forced to endure it. I am disappointed with the Sixth Circuit’s ruling in this case, and fearful of where it will lead. If therapists are permitted to harm their clients under the guise of ‘free speech,’ it’s only a matter of time before other licensed professions receive their own carveout. “After receiving more than 5,500 public comments, overwhelming opposition from community leaders, and bipartisan calls from public officials urging the Commission to slow down, I am extremely disappointed in the MPSC’s decision to fast-track DTE’s secret application to service this massive data center without holding a contested case hearing. While I am relieved that the Commission at least purports to have placed some conditions on DTE’s application, without being able to see the full, unredacted contract, and study the predicate conditions and enforcement mechanisms set by the Commission, it is impossible to verify any of these claims today. As Michigan’s chief consumer advocate, my office is reviewing the Commission’s order and considering what next steps we may be able to take to protect our residents. “This secret contract still leaves Michiganders scrounging for hidden and vital details that could harm ratepayers should these AI corporations leave, move out of state, or simply go bankrupt. None of the conditions proposed by the Commission will bring these terms into public view, including what exit fee provisions might be in effect before December 2027. “Rushing approval through an ex parte process lets DTE brush past important questions and shields the utility from the transparency the public deserves, and review by essential consumer protection organizations and offices such as mine, which I take personally as an elected official charged with protecting the consumers of this state. “Our regulatory system only works if the process is done properly and transparently. When the utilities and MPSC cut corners, Michigan ratepayers are left unprotected. While this decision to forego a contested case is a major setback for consumer protection watchdogs, and a detriment to the public’s trust in their appointed government regulators, my office will continue to stand with ratepayers, demand transparency from utilities, and push for a regulatory process that puts Michiganders, not corporations, first.” Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel

“When a consumer signs up for a subscription service, they expect to get the savings that are advertised and to be able to try it out without being unlawfully charged. They shouldn’t have to jump through hoops just to cancel a service they no longer want, and that’s why I am proud to join this lawsuit to hold Uber accountable for its alleged deceptive practices," said Attorney General Dana Nessel. Consumers Energy has consistently filed these rate hike requests filled with unjustifiable costs, and my office has consistently intervened to ensure any unfair or indefensible costs are not foisted onto its customers. Less than three months ago, the MPSC cut nearly 40% of Consumers Energy’s requested natural gas rate hike because the utility’s proposed costs could not be justified. This happens over and over again and amounts to millions of dollars.
