Even the typography in this book sucks. Why are the first lines of text in a paragraph with a drop cap (though they aren’t drop caps; they rise) set off with extra leading?

The similarity of the man’s scarf and the woman’s shirt (these are probably not the right terms) has me wondering – if not about the story, about the artist’s choices. Could the artist possibly have been unaware? Or should we blame the colorist?
