Together with 90 other experts we undertook a BioBlitz in the Hohe Tauern Nationalpark, Recording more than 950 species from various organismal groups.

Had a wonderful weekend of botanizing in the Austrian Alps. With the brilliant #moss fieldguide of @bbsbryology.bsky.social always at hand

Indeed, 3D scanning revealed that increasing structural complexity limits bryophyte diversity by homogenizing habitat conditions. These competitive effects remained undetected by conventional vegetation surveys.

We combined vegetation relevés, functional trait assessments, and 3D models of vascular plants to determine if structural approaches provide complementary or additional information explaining mechanisms of interaction with bryophytes.

Even if some previous studies found skylarks in photovoltaic systems, breeding behaviour depend a lot on system type, land use history, and location. Small-scale, row-mounted PV in open farmland seems not suitable as breeding habitat. #birds 🌎🧪🐥

After a hearty breakfast, our preparations for fieldwork are in full swing. Preparing butterfly traps, microclimate loggers, and vegetation sheets. Happy to be back in Kenya to work with and receive support from our friends and partners at Pwani, KEFRI, KFS and KWS in Arabuko-Sokoke Forest 🇰🇪🧪🦋🌳🙏

Thanks for the wonderful birding trip today @robinheinennl.bsky.social
With a juvenile white-tailed eagle as my personal highlight 😱

As a comparison two pictures taken with a zoom lens on the dslr. Not taken through a spotting scope. So for my needs, I conclude: if it’s about documenting a sighting, smartphone is the way the go. If it’s about taking more appealing pictures a proper lens it is.

This one is taken via the eyepiece with a smartphone. It’s a bit flat, too but much more convenient to work with :)

A few examples taken with the camera setup. It’s not that bad at all, but I always felt the images are a bit flat.

One of the many highlights of this years excursion: Buxbaumia viridis growing on loamy soil. An unusual substrate for this species. I mistook it for B. aphylla at first glance which would have been a lifer for me. A bit more patience needed until finally finding it I guess

Bryologists in action at this years autumnal moss excursion at Tegernsee. Thanks for organising @tayloria.bsky.social
and showing us 200+ species from various alpine habitats

Sphagnum capillifolium from last weekends hike up Hohe Kisten. It’s one of those Sphagnum species that can still grow in some of the highest elevations in Europe.

Autumn colors are glowing right now at the Isar. Munich’s green oasis is turning red and orange

Yes, very humid. The rain season is setting in right now. Good for nature, bad for our paper-reliant field assessments :D

The next course will be held in two years in Obergurgl, Tyrol. Can highly recommend to anyone interested in learning first-aid techniques, essential skills, as well as gaining legal knowledge and confidence for their fieldwork in exposed terrain!

This week, I had the chance to participate at an safety course for alpine fieldwork by @uniinnsbruck.bsky.social
Thanks a lot for perfect organization, great views and a lot of talking science with fellow glacier research colleagues

Thanks a lot for the hike and your company. I truly enjoyed roaming around nature and discussing science with you 😊
