My assumption is that Texas beats Rice or whoever instead of Ohio State) and is 10-2. Combine that with the head to head win and the recency bias of ou looking bad today against a subpar LSU.

You may be right and I am biased as a Texas Ex but I think identical record as Okie and a head to head win puts us in.

1) Defense is included in WAR and Cal got a lot of benefit from being a good catcher. Judge still had a higher WAR which just shows how insane his offense was this season.
2) The award is voted on before the postseason even starts, it’s a regular season award.
