My favourite theory is that at the end when MacReady offers Childs a drink from a whiskey bottle, is that it was actually gasoline from an unused Molotov cocktail and that lets Mac know that Childs is the Thing when he doesn’t react to the taste.

Shelley Duvall is an amazing actress and I think she could have given an equally quality performance without the psychological torment. She deserved so much more respect than she got it life.

The real stars of the film are Eiko Ishioka’s costumes. Dracula’s long red dressing gown is so strong, it makes Oldman’s performance exude power, even as he’s portraying an old man. And Lucy’s wedding dress allows Frost to juxtapose her performances as a sickly human versus a frightening Vampyre.

The other 2 stories are a completely different tone but haunting in their own ways. Stink Bug follows a man who is oblivious to the destruction that he is causing. And Cannon Fodder explores the horror of glorifying endless war and propaganda/indoctrination of youth.

I’ve always loved Yoshitaka Amano’s character designs for Vampire Hunter D. I first encountered his artwork in the booklet for Final Fantasy III (actually vi) for my SNES. It was one of 3 games my family actually owned and I played it religiously and his art gave so much emotion to the characters.

My favourite monologue in any film is Debbie explaining herself to the Addams, and instead of hate and anger she finds sympathy. They understand her and would have forgiven her past murders and welcomed her into the family. She could have found love… and jewelry.

She really highlighted the fact that though the Addams Family is weird they are still still a family and she shows genuine concern for other people, like when she finds another student in Wednesday’s class has chosen a reporter as their hero, “Have you talked to her parents?”

I also love the visual story telling they use by only casting actors over six feet in every scene Clarice is in.

But, let’s be honest. Clare Higgins’ performance carried this movie. Without her incredible skill and nuance as an actor, the movie wouldn’t have been nearly as enjoyable.

From Parker and Brett’s questions about bonuses, to Ripley and Lamberts exchange: “This isn’t our system.” “I know”, you can tell this crew isn’t one big happy family like Star Trek, and it foreshadows ‘special order 937’ and Ash’s reveal really well.
