MFRI celebrates today 19 June, a day of celebration and fight for for women´s right, but on this day in 1915, Icelandic women were granted the right to vote. A new chapter was opened last winter at the Institute when a Gyða María Símonardóttir took over the position of chief engineer. #womensright

The Super Swimmer Ross Edgley plans to swim 1,000 Miles in 100 Days in cooperartion with MFRI for the sake of science and in connection with the BioProtect project.

Deepwater areas off Iceland are characterized by a high species diversity and abundance of sharks that play a critical ecological role within this ecosystem. A new study investigates trophic ecology of the sharks employing stomach content analysis. More: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

A seminar will be held 27 March at 12.30 called: Capelin reared in different temperature scenarios and the effect on growth, survival and maturity across temperatures. Einar Pétur Jónsson, a PhD student, gives the talk in English. The seminar is open to everyone on-site and online. More on mfri.is

MFRI hosted recently a course on sampling and identifying chironomid pupal skins (insects). As 20 freshwater scientists sat for 4 days learning how to identify chironomid pupal skins, they found 20 new species that had not been documented in Iceland before. More:

A new mollusc species was recently discovered in the ocean around Iceland. It has been named after former MFRI´s employee Jónbjörn Pálsson and is called Buccinum palssoni Fraussen, Delongueville & Scaillet, 2024. More on mfri.is #newspeciesdiscovered #mollusc #marinebiology

Happy Christmas and a Merry Marine and Freshwater Research Year! Everyone at MFRI would like to thank you for pleasant communiaction in 2024. Here is the research vessel Bjarni Sæmundsson, which has served MFRI since 1970. We´ll say farewell to Bjarni soon and welcome Thorunn Thordardottir.

MFRI, along with a consortium of 22 parties under the leadership of the Icelandic Environment Agency, has received a 3.5 billion ISK grant from the EU for the LIFE ICEWATER project which aims is to strengthen the implementation of the water framework directive in Iceland. More on MFRI.is
