In our classics reading circle we read books that have been hugely influential. One thing I've noticed is that they often have stupid shit around the one key idea that pushed things forward. And sometimes they've been so fruitful that reading the original work feels very pedestrian. Basic and weak.

I may have been slightly exaggerating for effect 😃 for me, the issue is that sometimes characters seem to know all the faction and troop type names and use them as-is, regardless of whether it makes sense in-world.

Yeah, I think the whole masculinity categorisation thing has taken the literature somewhat in the wrong direction. Theories like hegemonic/hybrid/geek masculinity absolutely have value, but we also need a lot more research on how actual people relate to these categories and what they represent.
