Talkin' about old games, mostly Sega.
They let me talk on the HG101 Podcast sometimes by mistake.
He/him/they/them, these are all fine.

I know a lot of source ports have the option to disable it. I mean I get it, it's kind of weird, but also, not many games really DO that, especially in the way Quake does it. I do find that it does make enemies a bit easier to read when they telegraph their attacks.

I know what I like, and I like Quake to be very chunky in all regards. That's how I remember it. Source ports smooth things out too much and my brain can't handle that.

Running Quake in DOS is considered bad by some for whatever reason, but have you considered:
- no animation interpolation
- software rendering

I think the only difference is that the HEXEN.EXE file included is the v1.1 executable. If you install "Hexen: Beyond Heretic" it gives you the v1.0 executable.

Also I apparently didn't need to install the Steam instance of "Hexen: Beyond Heretic" because "Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel" just has "Hexen: Beyond Heretic" included in the files. Like, the HEXEN.EXE file and the HEXEN.WAD file are just there.

Like nobody involved with the original Steam release of these old games thought to pre-patch these very old files. They were just like, yeah, we got the bare minimum working on DOSBOX, here you go.

I was gonna argue about that, but then I realized I'm still mad that I can't play Mega Drive or Saturn games on PC until I get a proper six face buttons pad.

I thought it was a neat idea for games that weren't designed for controllers. The problem was, well, the games that were designed for controllers.

Yeah, back when the idea of the "Steam Machine" and the push into Linux for games and "PC gaming on your couch" and all that, it was something I was very interested in, but it felt very half-baked.
With how the Steam Deck turned out, and Linux gaming being more realized, I got some hope now.

I was thinking about how HORI release a Steam-branded controller a while back that didn't seem too different from an Xbox controller. This one might be fine if it isn't too wide. I got an original Steam controller still and I just can't put up with it.

Oh wait this launcher is just Doom95.

This is what the manual I found is telling me at least. I guess they figured if you were still just using DOS straight up during the time of Final Doom's release you can figure it out on your own.
