i don't think many get the privilege of being disqualified from a blazblue tournament held within their own game's discord server due to having connection problems LMAOOO

especially if you're there to engage with people not purely because of their interest in your game too! it shouldn't just be a community you want for your game but a community you yourself would be comfortable participating in like any other ig. idk. i say it like its easy but its not aha

if there's more to these spaces than just engaging with your work it can foster a more enduring space where people have reasons to hang out beyond that and i think that also allows you to be seen as someone who should be respected the same as any other community member there

maybe im just lucky since the unbeatable discord has been extremely self-sufficient even when we're not there. they run their own events and have their own sub-scenes that aren't strictly reliant on us developers giving them stuff to care about. i think that kind of homeliness is important

sadly that kind of enforcement is difficult without moderation. if you handle it solo you will struggle to maintain respect. even if it's inherently icky on paper it'd be good to at least discuss volunteer modding since people will do it if it means having a safe social space to be in

one thing i've fought for successfully in the past is boundaries between the devs and the community itself. like yea i'm always down to chat and answer questions but i have limits and i need to be respected like a person too, and if you treat me differently there will be problems

not to say its the best or it isn't without issues/risks. it requires a lot of oversight that is simply not reasonable for people to purely handle on top of other responsibilities. but i feel like if that's the case it'd be better to just not run a community at all and leave it to fans of your work
