6/ At @researchmar.bsky.social Rafael de la Torre is already leading a clinical trial (phase I-II) to test a new molecule, which acts on CB1, & has been shown to be safe and to improve communication and social interactions in people with Down's syndrome after a 4-week treatment.

5/ The discovery opens the door to new clinical trials to explore a long-term treatment capable of counteracting the cognitive alterations resulting from this syndrome and the cognitive decline that develops with age.

4/ 🗣️ However, "this experimental pharmacological intervention helps improve the memory of trisomic mice, but in no case does it reverse the signs of neurodegeneration.", adds Anna Vázquez-Oliver, first author of the study.

3/ 🗣️ "Based on what we see in our study with mice, it seems plausible to develop a long-term treatment that sustainably improves the quality of life of people with Down syndrome." states Andrés Ozaita, who has led the research.

2/ In humans: specific regions of the hippocampus in people with DS have elevated levels of the type 1 cannabinoid receptor (CB1)

In mice: CB1 inhibition substantially improves memory, reverses morphological alterations in microglia and reduces the presence of inflammatory markers in the plasma
