I completely agree. As you say, it's not as simple as phone number portability, but the idea of minimizing lock-in without putting that all on the user would be a net positive for everyone.

I switched to Fastmail, and also use my own domain for email, which Fastmail supports very easily. That's important to me because using my own domain means that I can switch mail providers in the future without having to change my email address again. It's a hedge against future enshittification.

I finally followed through on migrating away from gmail this year, and for me it was 100% worth the time and expense. I realize that's not an option for everyone, and it absolutely blows that Google is actively making things even worse. Enshittification indeed.

I went to the VLA whole visiting my grandparents as a kid (they basically threw me and my brother in their can and drove all over the southwest), and it was super cool! I 100% annoyed my partner by half-shrieking, "Ooh ooh ooh, that's the Very Large Array!" the moment it showed up on screen.

Maybe the most naive thought of my adult life came an hour ago when I said, "Wait, these fucks are colluding to hide who actually caved? That's how disingenuous these assholes are?"
The better question is, why would I expect anything else? And yet somehow these losers disappointed me again. Jesus.

Durbin has sucked for a long time and simply does not give a shit about anything his constituents want. I've been in a constant state of loathing for his bullshit for years. Of course he was involved in this fucking farce.

This is such a great way of describing it. I was unenthusiastic about voting for JB (I supported Pawar early in the cycle, then voted for Biss in the primary after Pawar dropped out), but since being elected JB has consistently impressed me. He's legitimately progressive and effective.
