Firstly yes, an EV produces fewer emissions in its life cycle, and in fact begins paying dividends at about 22k’s driven. Secondly, the goal is not to replace cars that are still being driven, it’s to replace new cars that are being added.

And that article I posted the link to said 11k miles in the UK. Plus the grid overall gets greener every year while oil extraction gets more and more difficult, so dirtier. @karinkirk.bsky.social put together some great info on why EVs are more efficient:

Electric vehicles use half the energy of gas-powered vehicles » Yale Climate Connections
They’re just much more efficient.

I love this! Thanks for sharing. 🫶
I will post the article I read recently that had the stats I quoted. I’m traveling and can’t find it right now.

True! It depends on your grid. Some grids are cleaner than others. It can be as soon as 17k driven is some places. This is mostly to offset the emissions produced in manufacturing the vehicle, producing the steel, battery, and so on.

Sad it was a second year of no results. Do we think in the world of today that these multi country agreements are even possible? Are we even meeting our Paris obligations? Is anyone?

Yet- individual sectors are making progress.

Of course, anytime you can replace a car ride with a bus or bike is best! But it’s not realistic to expect the world to stop using cars. We can mitigate by improving bike lanes, or mass transit, while transitioning personal vehicles. Anytime we can encourage responsible consumerism is always great!
