As he later wrote: I remember one distinguished member of Göttingen University saying to me: «If they should venture to break our university to piece by expelling men such as James Franck, Born, Courant, Landau [the latter two mathematicians], we shall rise like one man to protest against it. » The next day, the newspapers reported that the same scientists and many others had been dismissed owing to their Jewish race and their disgraceful influence on universities and students. And all the other members of Göttingen University remained sitting and had forgotten their intention to rise and protest. (Rosbaud, 1945) The sense of helpless fatalism here seems not so much misjudged as calculatedly self-serving. The Hungarian physicist Leo Szilard, working at the University of Berlin in 1933 but shortly to leave for England, expressed the situation very well: I noticed that the Germans always took a utilitarian point of view. They asked, «Well, suppose I would oppose this, what good would / do? I wouldn't do very much good, I would just lose my influence. Then why should I oppose it? » You see, the moral point of view was completely absent, or very weak, and every consideration was simply, what would be the predictable consequence of my action. And on that basis did I reach the conclusion in 1931 that Hitler would get into power, not because the force of the Nazi revolution were so strong, but rather because I thought that there would be no resistance whatsoever. (Szilard, 1979)

This update from @feedingamerica.org South Florida is infuriating & heartbreaking.

Our government is making it harder to support local communities by reducing how much we can give to families AND how what we can pay to local farmers.

This is insane. It’s not efficiency if it kills people.
So many of our partners and friends have asked how Feeding South Florida is doing in the midst of the current climate. We’ve already experienced some significant losses and others are looming: Several significant grants have been cancelled or paused (approximately $800,000) A government grant providing $15 million dollars worth of fresh produce from farmers and growers has been paused Several of our close community partners have had to shut down operations affecting our wrap around service offerings There’s been a 20% increase in our requests for emergency food assistance. Uncertainty in Washington. Layoffs at Home. Hunger all around. Right now, families across South Florida are facing a storm of challenges. Rising costs, stalled government funding, and now, widespread layoffs that are stripping away stability almost overnight. Feeding South Florida is seeing the impact firsthand. Every day, more families are turning to us for help, many for the first time. Parents who were working just weeks ago are now out of a job. Seniors on fixed incomes are being squeezed tighter than ever. Children are feeling the effects in empty lunchboxes and dinner plates.

The tension between running a business and watching the world burn around me is an untenable feeling.

I wrestle with this cognitive dissonance daily, wondering if I'm alone. Turns out, I'm not. I've talked to many fellow SMB owners who share this struggle.
