a taste of “the tower” from Grain 52.3
The first stanza of a poem by melanie brannagan frederiksen called “the tower.” The poem’s epigraph is from Sachiko Murakami’s “Forth”: “Molecules march from you./ You lapse from child to pitiful fantasy in a matter of minutes./ Somewhere in a snowstorm, flakes melt the subjective mood. The begin again begins again. Carries you with it” The text of the poem reads: “you draw daily dread/ : this card/ sets you caged-cat prowling, three steps/ across your study, three steps back, across/ and back. your pulse thrums doom/ (not) doom not (doom). january in march, you/ can no longer be contained. you flee the house, fling/ the phone to escape twitter’s flood : if not the new/ virus then fires in australia, accelerating apocalypse/ brings no wisdom. somewhere in a snow”.
