the excerpt thing is prob related to test prep?
I will say the degree to which the entire school experience is now uploaded to (and monetized I’m sure) the Common App universe for college application was gross and I can’t help suspect this is a big part of the problem

I know this is an issue but my kids, in both private and regular public schools, have been expected to read whole books. Just to add a data point before despairing.
I’ll note that the private schools were tiny. But the public school is a huge regional school were only 41% of kids go to college
