I’m old enough to remember why.

20+ years ago, the Post set up its digital news operations in Arlington, Virginia (a “right-to-work” aka non-union state) to avoid the unionization of its digital reporters and editors. It included an online opinion section. (They joined the Guild in 2010.)

I get a LOT of dumb shit via Act Blue because my phone number pre 2001 was a landline owned by a now-elderly Black man in DC named Frederick but this shit takes the fucking cake SIR

This one not only gets at how people are using AI, but is actually a really great exploration of how AI “works” www.theverge.com/c/24300623/a...

SCOTUS ruled 25 years ago in Crosby v National Foreign Trade Council that this was roundly unconstitutional so he may be seeking these but our trading partners aren’t going to spend years negotiating deals that can never take effect. Souter wrote the unanimous opinion. www.oyez.org/cases/1999/9...

I don’t normally do this, but this is a shitty headline because it misrepresents the science (the only study that ever purported to show this was faked, proven so, withdrawn and the doctor had his license suspended) with the “if” but also because you can hit all the same points *without* doing that.

This passage by @ryanhatesthis.bsky.social today in Garbage Day nails one thought I pretty regularly have about AI: the industry most likely to be fully disrupted first is OnlyFans. www.garbageday.email/p/drowning-i...

The NYT piece on Blake Lively’s allegations against Baldoni and Heath mentions in passing that the two men are members of the Baha’i faith, which is an interesting aside that the writers don’t explore given that one of the prominent teachings of their prophet Bahá'u'lláh is to avoid backbiting.

The last line of this article, about writer Jill Ciment’s 45-year marriage, which began when she was 17 and her married 45-year-old teacher initiated a sexual relationship, is absolutely killing me as a revelation for her to have (and him to… not). www.npr.org/2024/07/09/n...

Surprise (or not): Said unethical eugenicist who falsified data was actively involved in The Bell Curve and laid out the purpose of its publication and dissemination.

The more things nominally change at my alma mater, the more they sound (and look) the fucking same. Proud of my fellow alumni, still embarrassed by/won’t give money to the wealthy, white bejowled “leadership” there.
