When using zoom lenses, the greater the zoom, the more they pull the background near to the foreground, making the background objects appear bigger. I suspect this is what is throwing you. Have you ever seen pics of the Poolbeg Towers with and the Dublin Mts large in the pic, exactly that effect.

I shot this with my Sigma 18-35 F1.8. I just set the aperture to its absolute lowest to get the maximum creamy bokeh for the background. No resizing or LR magic used on the statue, shot as is.
