Finally got around to panel lining this kit. Very unique design, I dig it. GQuuuuuux has had some very funky (positive) designs that I've really been enjoying.

Now I'm waiting on water slide decals to replace the (crummy) included stickers for the red highlights.

Cool find from last night's blacklighting session: this caterpillar hunter beetle, genus Calosoma. A very cool, metallic colored predatory ground beetle. This individual is probably C. wilcoxi or C. scrutator.

Been cooped up in the office all winter, so I went and dipped my toes in the local creek. IDs in the alt text!

The following photos are all in my field sampling tray, which is a shallow white basin that I put the aquatic animals I find dipnetting into. This first photo is of a small reddish-brown damselfly nymph, Argia spp., clinging to some debris in the center of the frame. It is elongated but stout, with a squared off head and cylindrical abdomen. It's missing the usual caudal gills that these guys have, which do sometimes fall off. They're normally flat and tapered, leaf-like. A small baby crayfish clambers through the tray, something in the family Cambaridae. Its tail is almost translucent and its claws are little more than tiny snippers at this stage. A long, slender brook salamander (Eurycea spp.). Its sides are a dark brownish black, and its back a medium tan, but the boundary between the two isn't especially distinct -- some mottled speckling extends from the sides onto the back and vice versa. A stream mayfly nymph, family Heptageniidae. Its stout body ends in three long, tapered tails, one of which has been damaged and fallen off halfway up its length. The nymph has very flat, leaf-like limbs and a rounded, flattened head that collectively helps it cling to rocks and debris in the flowing waters these guys prefer.

Was digging through my old images and came across this gif I made of an eastern pondhawk dragonfly emerging from my aquarium several years back. Enjoy!

A quick gif of an eastern pondhawk dragonfly metamorphosing from the aquatic nymph stage to become an adult dragonfly. The nymph, which is a squat, wingless little guy that doesn’t look much like the adult, has already climbed out of the water on a stalk of vegetation. It then sheds its skin, crawling out from a split down its back, and unfurling its wing pads, which then slowly expand parallel to its abdomen as it pumps hemolymph (bug blood) into them. Its abdomen also extends downward into the long, familiar tapered abdomen of an adult dragonfly. Its colors slowly shift from a pale semi-translucent yellow green to a bright, vibrant green with black banding. Finally, it spreads its wings to rest from the endeavor before readying to fly away and go on with its life. The gif is sped up, but this process normally takes a few hours and is done overnight to avoid predators.

I think I am going to have to make some kind of master data sheet (or a few) for this project I’m working on, because even finding the proper raw data for analysis has been a nightmare.

Happy Friday, folks. Here’s a close-up of a male blue dasher dragonfly (Pachydiplax longipennis) to brighten up any winter blues you might be having.
