I laid it out as clearly as I could. Sorry it’s so long.
I'm going to say something that a lot of historians are aware of but which I think is too seldom articulated. For many years, this is how the deal has worked: a number of industries are only viable in their current form with a workforce of people too desperate and terrorized to demand a living wage. Agriculture, garment production, domestic labor, construction -all of these industries and others allocate their substantial profits in such a way that they depend on a workforce paid a pittance to work in terrible conditions. Sometimes people say that undocumented immigrants do the jobs white people won't do, but I always think that's a little misleading. There's nothing biologically different about white people; they're just largely not desperate and terrorized enough. Many people argue that this is precisely why we have borders in the first place: to create a reserve army of laborers desperate enough to keep afloat industries that otherwise would make no financial sense. So this is how it's worked for many years, and everyone understood the deal. Of course, they never spoke it out loud: instead leaders have praised the "melting pot" and the "land of opportunity." Meanwhile we have made the process of legalization an impenetrable labyrinth and kept poor working people terrorized. While this was all going on, it made sense to allow immigrants to do double-duty: they serve as both vital labor *and* the scapegoat once white people started noticing that the middle class of this country is rapidly disappearing. That, of course, is because corporations have increasingly moved operations overseas, disemboweled labor unions, and employed gig workers and contract labor— even as social welfare programs have been demolished. You could say that it's another way immigrants work for this country: by serving as an attractive distraction from the otherwise blatant transfer of wealth from ordinary people to the super-rich. But Trump, as is so often the case, either wasn't aware of the rules or saw an opportunity to grab an applause line that his colleagues had tactfully sidestepped. He started talking about mass deportations, and his supporters, who of course were never aware of the deal in the first place, were delighted to take him up on it. Based on everything they knew, it was just the logical next step. That's how we get here. Deporting people— remember, these are human beings, with families and friends and hopes and dreams-doesn't change the fact that a bunch of industries don't make financial sense, at least in their current configuration, when people are paid a living wage. Whether Trump is aware of or cares about this intractable fact, I frankly don't know. But once again, immigrants are serving double-duty: this time, they're providing the excuse for the military occupation of a city that's always been a thorn in Trump's side. That this excuse doesn't stand up to even the faintest of scrutiny doesn't really matter, as long as he can keep enough of the country foaming at the mouth for long enough to cement this power grab. Please don't fall for this. Think back on what you know about how history has unfolded. Is it possible that this explanation makes more sense than the narrative you've accepted? If that's the case, then we need to start thinking more clearly about how we can aid the people who need us right now.
