We never needed a decentralized system before, and I'm not convinced that it would solve the problem. There are a number of things we can do to address the problem before we make the system complicated by a distributed system. I am reminded of the Leslie Lamport quote about distributed systems.

the server has been receiving SYN flood attacks. I made one change to improve that and yet another rate limiting change. The server has also become a target for harvesting content.

one minor improvement: generate the name of the downloaded added key with the date in it so you are less likely to overwrite an existing key. Just a guess...

that was actually an author error. They did a cut and paste error for Moni Naor's ORCID. We don't authenticate ORCIDs because it's too much of a pain in the neck.

Looking at it another way, lowering the cost can allow scholarly societies to carry out their publishing duties more efficiently. It's unfortunately also true that "labor-saving technologies" will impact employment. These things are all interlocking, but we need to increase pressure on profits.

It's a nice article, but I disagree with one point: "Our analysis also suggests that technological advances will not help." It's certainly true that _some_ technological advances will interfere, but others can help. Labor-saving technology can reduce the cost of publishing. arxiv.org/abs/2504.10424
