My face when I opened my email to see that I was accepted to the @tinhouse.bsky.social Summer Workshop!

I’m so thrilled for the chance to work with Omar El Akkad & all the incredible workshop attendees!

My joy was boundless when I won. Now it’s deeper than that. Bittersweet, painful, & so grateful. He made it onto the printed the page at a time when I can only feel the weight of his absence.

This story’s weird as fuck, & I think it’s because our time together in his garden felt so otherworldly.

The story didn’t work for so many drafts, not until I found the grandfather character & brought my own fears to the story.

I was so excited to tell him when I won & that it was largely about us. Now the book has arrived, and he is gone.

Thank you @salamandermag.bsky.social & Kevin Wilson for believing in my work ❤️

This story is about a squirrel invasion, a mysterious plant plague, but mostly about the love between a young man and his grandfather.
