Today we commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the U.S. It is a reminder of an important element of our shared history, but it is also an exhortation to think about the impact of our past on the present and to resolve to build a better future, for all people, by working together.

I planted two of these weeping red buds in December. I bought them on clearance from a local nursery and I was afraid they would not transition well. They seem to be thriving. First they bloom in lavender and then show off a cascade of lime-green leaves.
