Cool that’s you and more likely about who you are interacting with. Folks are literally named “América” or “Américo” and that is not an aspirational name about the U.S. - that is abt honoring the geography where people are.

No, it’s not a “technical” application or etymology - it’s, in much the same way that “American” refers to people from the U.S., abt active language use. Ex: What is typical in parts of Latin Am is to use the term “Norte Americano” to refer largely to ppl from the U.S. and less often to Canada.

B/c it’s also a political argument about the Global North and Global South and how much space the U.S. takes up even at the level of language. “USian” language is also a convo about imperialism and power, not just semantics. Most ppl do not use this term but no need to dismiss use out of hand

People from Latin America also regularly use “American” in some form to refer to themselves and to place; in Spanish, the term for people from the U.S. is “Estadounidense” - the English translation of this is in fact USian. It’s unwieldy but not without merit
