Kind of wild they were on there in the first place.

These interactions are making me laugh. Thank you, you glorious people.

Yikes. That's one of his most Hitler-y posts yet.

This will assuredly spur on more violence against immigrants, Dems, and LGBTQ+ people.

I like the people saying "I'm going to uninstall now" because:

1) Fewer bigots on the seas, and...

2) Rare has posted about celebrating Pride I think basically every June from the SOT account, so, like, why didn't they uninstall then?!

I'm not overlooking that. I understand the nuance. I'm saying that the argument that the deal is bad because "UK gets discount on US stuff and US pays more for UK stuff" misconstrues the purpose and execution of tariffs. That's all. I agree the tariffs were bad at the outset and bad now.

The 10% tariff on UK goods will have no effect on what?
May 10, 2025 at 9:42 PM
Ah, good. Poor people have it tough enough already, we better remove any last shreds of joy from their lives. That will surely finally motivate them to get a better job and make more money. /s

Agreed, there are much better/smarter ways they could have addressed these issues (starting with understanding a trade deficit is not implicitly a bad thing). I'm just saying that the analysis that "the UK gets a discount on US stuff" being a bad deal is wrong, because that increases US exports.
May 10, 2025 at 1:47 PM
Yes, absolutely. The tariffs are dumb as hell. The way they were rolled out was basically insanity. The method for the calculation of the "reciprocal" tariffs wasn't grounded in reality. They have hurt US consumers, the economy, US standing in the world, and relationships with long-standing allies.
May 10, 2025 at 1:26 PM
... of those products from the US, which benefits US producers. Thus in this image the US producers benefit more than the UK producers. Consumers are always collateral damage with tariffs/trade wars, which is why they (mostly) benefit the wealthy.
May 10, 2025 at 1:23 PM
... money", but that's not how that works. The higher cost was due to the import tax (tariffs), so the reduction in price would be only mean the UK government taxes in less tax revenue. US producers/exporters would charge the same for the goods. This increases the likelihood the UK imports more...

Tariffs are basically always bad for consumers. That's baked in. Tariffs are basically only useful as a tool to drive up production and consumption of domestic goods (at their most basic). The analysis in the image suggests "US products will cost less in the UK, which means the US makes less ...

... saying.
May 10, 2025 at 1:14 PM
... fewer taxes on US imports increases income for US-based companies that produce and export those things to the UK.

Again, the whole trade war and tariffs policy rollout is dumb and harmful for US consumers, but the deal in the image itself is positive compared to a week ago. That's all I'm...
May 10, 2025 at 1:14 PM
... paying more is baked in. Like I said, I am opposed to the tariffs and Trump, but pretending that the deal in the image was stupid because "we pay more for UK stuff and they pay less for US stuff" shows a misunderstanding of what tariffs are for and what "costing more" means. The UK paying...
May 10, 2025 at 1:11 PM
That might be true, but the point of tariffs is basically always to improve imports/exports to drive production. At its most basic, the on-paper "deal" from the image is beneficial to US exports and detrimental to UK exports. Tariffs are ALWAYS inflationary and bad for consumers, so consumers ...
May 10, 2025 at 1:09 PM
... will cost more for the US to import (and for US consumers), meaning the US will import and consume fewer UK goods (bad for the UK, good for US and other producers). I'm against the tariffs as they have been enacted, but pretending what the image shows is a bad deal for the US is misleading.
May 10, 2025 at 1:03 PM
George, I'm a big fan of yours and am hugely anti-Trump, but this analysis is wrong.

What the image shows is that the tax UK importers will pay on US goods will be lowered, making US goods more affordable in the UK, meaning our exports will increase (good for our producers). Meanwhile UK goods...

No idea why this post jogged this in my memory, but do you like eggnog or not?! This could save you in 8 months.

ALSO, when there's a large blank space after a chart on the page, I don't want to have to solve some Raiders of the Lost Ark riddle to be able to put some normal f**king text there.

What the hell are you doing over there?!
