As a newspaper reporter, any time your work gets picked up by the cartoonist is a sign you're on the money. Straight to the pool room.

Allegedly I have 10k followers on The Site Formerly Known as Twitter, and only 1.7k here. Here’s an A/B test with identical content. Despite 1/6th the ostensible audience, here it generates four times the engagement (and no trolls).

Maritime Cook Islands is a private company founded and run by former CI S-Gs, one of whom also went on to also hold senior roles in Rarotonga’s government. One current director and shareholder is now acting Foreign Secretary. The CI govt only gets "modest" (five-figure) income from the operation.

While the story itself is more than 4000 words (all gold, honestly), it can be told through this single visualisation. Here, with tools from Starboard Maritime Intelligence, we see traffic routes of oil tankers flagged to the Cook Islands in August 2024. NB: Oil tankers don’t deliver oil to Russia.

What do you mean I can't idly search the Companies Office for filing updates on a Monday evening? What does MBIE expect me to do instead? Enjoy a drink and presitge television? This is an outrage.

In memorandum of the burning down of Palmie's The Fitz, here's my first (and only, really) piece of gonzo journalism for Salient in 2003 about the Worst Pub in the World. CW: Piss and vomit. @jgreenbrookheld.bsky.social

I recall being similar tempted - Jake Gyllenhaal in second billing! I love Jarhead - until I again checked the market.

Had planned to do a deep-dive into comparative damage assessment methodologies, but hit 3k words and thought it best not to end on a downer. Instead I ended with a fobidden joke:

The Zuru nappy trial hearing, just concluded after four long weeks, keeps bringing the tea. (Honestly, the most bonkers civil case I've ever covered.) www.nzherald.co.nz/business/com...

Exciting developments in the Nippert household. Am jazzing up my kombu tsuyu udon soup recipe with fish tofu and frozen fish balls (mirin-drenched oyster mushrooms warming in oven).

That one time a Chinese military officer baller went rogue and purchased the hulk of a decommissioned aircraft carrier during a bender, with a cover story as it being floating casino, and ended up bootstrapping the PRC navy into C21 second place in CAGs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese...

The two largely incompatible ideas I’m holding in my head today: 1. “Beclowned” is a truly amazing addition to the English language. 2. It’s weird and unsettling that we’re now in a world where the White House metatron uses it. www.cbsnews.com/news/h-r-mcm...

I’m back and can report NYC streets are full of psychics and weed. And even blurry night photos without a cityscape can be gelocated in minutes. Found a few amazing leads on old stories (one with 10 years of silence!) and some v promising angles to chase on new ones. Thanks Brian Gaynor Initiative!
