"Our results suggest that while mitigating further global warming can reduce heat mortality, mass mortality events remain plausible at near-future temperatures despite current adaptations to heat."

Is the Atlantic Ocean circulation close to tipping?
Hear the latest science as I presented it last month at the ATLAS25 event in Helsinki.
Let me know if anything is unclear, or if you see good reasons why your government shouldn't immediately act on this. 🌊

This is really the key graphic that I think tells the story best: it's the amount of projected warming for each year's analysis

Things really did get better after the Paris Agreement. But it has stagnated post-covid, and we could backslide......

@aliduffey.bsky.social and I have a new response to the Siegert et al piece on geoengineering published as a commentary in Frontiers (the online version is now properly edited with the figure).
Frontiers | Commentary: Safeguarding the polar regions from dangerous geoengineering: a critical assessment of proposed concepts and future prospects
Research into polar climate intervention is understandably controversial. The deliberate manipulation of Earth's climate has deep physical, political, an...

Always my fav chart from the GCB, and here's the 2025 update.

It lays out what we've avoided, what we've failed to avoid, and what's at stake if we let the future slip

We are not on a good trajectory, and slipping back into a worse trajectory is always possible. But: we know it bleeds

Good thread from Dave about the new IEA "Current Policies Scenario" making a lot of the headlines.

Here is a very quick mock-up I made of what this scenario assumes for solar PV additions through to 2035, with historical context.

I'll let you decide whether this seems likely.

I am proud to be on the Working Group for this Royal Society report.

We can no longer exclude the possibility of devastating climate impacts even under ambitious emission mitigation scenarios. Thus, given that SRM is the only way to reduce temperatures on a short timescale, ...
Techniques to reflect an additional small portion of sunlight back into space could help cool the planet if deployed globally, but they cannot address the full range of climate impacts or replace emission cuts, says our new briefing today: #ClimateChange royalsociety.org/news/2025/11...

In an op-ed for TR, @davidkeith.bsky.social & @danvisioni.bsky.social voice deep concerns about Stardust & other for-profits racing into solar geoengineering — and asserting claims that, they argue, the science doesn't support.
Why the for-profit race into solar geoengineering is bad for science and public trust
Two scientists argue that the growing commercial efforts to counter climate change by reflecting away sunlight will thwart responsible research in the field.

Lovely! (Check out the replies!)
Genuinely delighted to download a PhD thesis from a university repository where the author has neglected to remove the words "BITCH THIS IS YOUR THESIS" from the filename.

I’ve never been shy nor ashamed of the fact that the core of my research is around SRM. I think there is merit in research: if we can show there are ways to ameliorate current and future climate change, we should know. If there aren’t, or if SRM could be used to make things worse, we should know.

Interesting new paper from Exeter colleague Jim Haywood, and previous @exeter.ac.uk PhD student Alice Wells about geoengineering - specifically what would sulphate aerosol injection do with respect to high levels of global warming 1/2.

I have a new @nytimes.com guest essay w/ @davidkeith.bsky.social about sunlight reflection. We note its not a solution for climate change and at best a band aid to treat systems, and suggest if its ever done it should only be to replace the cooling from air pollution today:
Opinion | A Responsible Way to Cool the Planet
A small, carefully scaled geoengineering program could compensate for the loss of cooling as we eliminate sulfur pollution.
