I don’t feel, as someone living with HIV, that I am lesser than other people.

Make Stigma History.

The stigma that persists around HIV creates barriers to testing, treatment and effective prevention.
Ending HIV stigma is crucial to ending the HIV epidemic.

I was diagnosed with #HIV in 1998, when I was 30.
Many of my friends had died of AIDS. I did not expect to live to 50.
I’m 58 now.
HIV treatment works.
Treatment also makes it impossible for me to pass HIV on during sex.
Ensure HIV treatment for all.
End HIV stigma.

Globally, about 41 million people live with HIV.
I am one of them.
HIV treatment works - but almost 1 in 4 are still not being treated.
HIV treatment also prevents HIV from being passed on during sex - the risk is zero - so treating everybody with HIV is the most powerful tool in HIV prevention too.

It’s sometimes said that history may not repeat itself but often rhymes.
We all can learn lessons from history and, at this critical moment for the rights of LGBTQ+ communities, now is an apt time for LGBTQ folk to listen to each other across generations, both older to younger and younger to older.

“I love sherry because it’s just a little bit too strong.”
Performing ‘I Miss the War’ at the @queertheatreuk.bsky.social showcase.
I was inspired by the wise old gays I met in my late teens / early 20s, who recalled a time before the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality, often with affection.

Pat and Breda McConnon (pictured above) were the landlords of the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, presiding over a golden era of drag.
For many gays in the homophobic 80s and 90s they were the parents we wished we had.
They stood with us, both of them arrested for their troubles.

I kick myself that I only saw him once, at the Milton Keynes bowl on the Serious Moonlight Tour.
When Black Star came out I had a fantasy that he was going to do one more tour but, well we all know what happened next.

I don’t mean to brag but… twice!

Throughout my 20s, I wore an AIDS awareness red ribbon pretty much everyday.
My friends were dying. It’s what we did.
AIDS is not over.
630,000 people died of it last year.
1 December is #WorldAIDSDay.

It was the 1980s.
Drag queen Dave Dale was giving Sharon make-up tips in the Queen Vic and London’s gay scene was ruled by Regina Fong, Adrella and Lily Savage.
They weren’t ‘fashion forward’, they didn’t do high kicks let alone death drops, but for me this was the golden era of drag.

Andrew or Jonathan?
TBH even if the category was ‘best person for financial advice’ I’d probably still choose Jonathan.

In London we rarely speak to strangers on the tube but we will grimace and roll our eyes with collective exasperation if it’s too crowded or the train comes to a sudden stop.
We may curse the tourist who blocks an entrance but we will gladly offer travel advice to anyone who asks or looks confused.

58+ years old.
27+ years living with HIV.
Shameless.

It’s perplexing that the BBC is currently under scrutiny for a supposed liberal bias in favour of trans rights.
Here, a spokesperson for an anti-trans group is quoted, the article says that trans inclusion would be illegal (it wouldn’t) and lists an anti-trans organisation for more info.

Name your top 4 80s films.

If I could have those long flowing locks again, even if just for a day, I’d jump at the chance.
I came fairly close during lockdown.
November 22, 2025 at 4:10 PM
Those 80s haircuts in #StrangerThings that people say are horrible?
I’ve had them all!
November 22, 2025 at 2:49 PM
How do you mean?
I do a little bit of sketching now and then (I’d like to do more).
And I do acting when I get the chance, like this Wednesday.
This is a miniature painting I did of Derek Jarman.

Hanging by a poster, hoping to be recognised.

If you’re free next Weds and fancy some queer theatricals, come see me and a bunch of gorgeous and talented @queertheatreuk.bsky.social folk in the 3rd Outcast showcase.

Yes, all present and correct.

#TransDayOfRemembrance
The intolerance and hostility directed at trans and gender diverse people carries a heavy toll, not just the terrible number who die violently each year, but also those whose lives are lost through self harm or from the lack of appropriate services.
