I'm a dad, a writer, an educator, a theatre director and a financial aid director. Also a lifelong Bears fan. Even when they’re terrible.
Will people get a Schoolhouse Rock reference?

I don't remember that one!

And now I'm stuck. Of course. Argh. Need some conflict.

So I have an alien and a human astronaut on a deserted planet that is messing with their minds. So far the props are: a ukulele, a backpack, a canteen, and two spaceships. And a couple of sharpies.

So here we goooooo.....

and then the show must go on! I'm almost always a writer. This year I have only two actors (though I may be able to work in my director as an actor too to a lesser extent) in the cast. My randomly assigned genre is "Sci Fi". And I have to work in this line: "Holy hell, get the Raid!"

I'll just sum up by saying I know higher education professionals in financial aid offices (and all throughout the colleges) will do everything they can to support students. But could the federal government stop making it harder and harder for us? #highered

There are nuances to how this is all done that make it even worse for students in certain situations, too, but this thread is too long already and I know many of you tuned me out when I started doing math.

We know education is the great equalizer when it comes to rich and poor. This will make it harder for people to escape poverty to say nothing about being able to live up to their full potential.

Let's do that math - $4750-$3000 = $1750 for living expenses. How far do you think that will go?
December 5, 2025 at 10:44 PM
A half time student can only receive half of that annual loan amount. Instead of $9500, they get $4750.
December 5, 2025 at 10:44 PM
The big change this bill does?
December 5, 2025 at 10:44 PM
$6500 won't cover all of that (rent in Iowa is around $700/month at the cheapest and we all know what's happened with food prices), but it will cover a good chunk. Around 70% of community college students work so they're paying for the rest with a part time or sometimes full time job. #highered
December 5, 2025 at 10:44 PM
The average full time tuition cost of a community college in Iowa is $4500, so a 1/2 time student would pay $2250 in tuition and we'll say $750 in books, supplies and fees. Students can use the remaining funds ($9500-$3000=$6500) to pay for living expenses, like rent and food and transportation.
December 5, 2025 at 10:44 PM
There are new annual loan limits for undergraduate students and they're tied to enrollment level. So right now a first year independent student at a community college taking 6 credits can receive the full loan amount - $9500. #highered

@kfishbain.bsky.social, am I right in thinking Oz hasn’t been playing much? What’s his snap count?

We’ll all be watching to see what the accreditor does next. Do they push back and maintain their independence? Or do they allow a corrupt regime to use them in their attack on higher education?

Wasn't the guy who did in his 20s? I don't think he was a teenager.
